Electropolishing and Passivation

Specializing in electropolishing and passivation for stainless steel and nickel alloys, Stainless Solutions provides these services on our in-house fabrications, as well as components and assemblies supplied by others.

Electropolishing, often referred to as “reverse plating,” is an electrochemical process that smooths and polishes the surface of metal components by removing a thin layer of material. The result is a smooth, high-quality finish with improved corrosion resistance.

  • Improved Surface Finish: Electropolishing removes imperfections, burrs, and oxidation, creating a bright, smooth surface that is aesthetically pleasing and easier to clean.
  • Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: By removing free iron and contaminants from the surface, electropolishing enhances the material’s resistance to corrosion, especially in harsh environments such as food processing, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.
  • Reduced Surface Friction: The polished surface provides reduced friction, which is beneficial for applications requiring smooth movement or less wear, such as in machinery or equipment.
  • Hygienic and Clean Surfaces: Electropolishing eliminates microscopic surface cracks and pits, reducing the potential for bacteria and contaminants to accumulate. This makes it especially suitable for industries where sanitation is critical, such as the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors.

Passivation is a chemical treatment process that enhances the natural oxide layer on stainless steel and other metals, improving their corrosion resistance and overall longevity. This process is ideal for metals exposed to corrosive environments.

  • Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: Passivation removes free iron and other contaminants from the surface, allowing the metal to form a protective oxide layer that prevents rust and corrosion. This is particularly important for components exposed to chemicals, moisture, or harsh environments.
  • Improved Durability: By enhancing the metal’s natural resistance to environmental factors, passivation extends the lifespan of your components, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
  • Clean and Contaminant-Free Surface: Passivation improves the cleanliness of the material surface by removing iron particles and other contaminants, making it ideal for industries where hygiene and cleanliness are critical, like pharmaceuticals and food processing.
